VANITAS

Living by herself in a one-bedroom apartment during the height of the pandemic, Sarah, inspired by 17th-century Vanitas still life paintings, created this series of Vanitas portraits using what she already had at home. All photos were taken in the spring and summer of 2020.

Vanitas explores the fleeting nature of time, the frivolousness of earthly pleasures, and the inevitability of death. Sarah proposes that frivolity and whimsy are categorically imperative in the face of death, and while time continues to be at our deficit. In death, we remember to live.
